Lists
Keep shared lists for shopping, plans, and things you want to try. Lists are shared with your household unless you make one private.
Checklists and collections
Lists work in one of two ways, depending on their type.
- Checklists
- Groceries, shopping, packing, and custom lists are checklists. You check items off as you get or pack them, then reset the list and use it again. See Groceries and Shopping.
- Collections
- Restaurants, To Watch, Reading, Recipes, and Wines are collections that grow over time. Each item has a detail card. Marking an item done records that you’ve been, watched, read, or tried it; it stays on the list. See Restaurants for an example.
Adding to a list
Each list has an add bar at the bottom. You can:
- Type an item and add it. Gatherby may correct the spelling and file it under a category, such as an aisle on your grocery list. You can edit either afterward.
- 📷 Add a photo of a product, a wine label, a handwritten list, or a restaurant sign. The photo is processed to identify the item, and Gatherby adds what it finds. Check the result, since it can be wrong.
- Share to Gatherby from another app, such as a recipe, a product link, or a place.
- Ask Siri (iPhone): say “Add to Gatherby,” then say what to add. A grocery item goes on your grocery list.
Your household has a monthly allowance for automatic details, such as book authors and restaurant addresses. If you reach it, you can still add items. Missing details fill in after the allowance resets at the start of each month.
Finding your way around a list
- Grouping and sorting
- Checklists group items by aisle or category. You can also see them in one list with open items on top, or A to Z. Collections group by type, such as restaurants by cuisine, watchlists by genre, or wines by type. A watchlist can also show just Movies or just Shows.
- Filters
- Collections have filters for what you haven’t done yet and what you have. The labels depend on the list: To try and Been for restaurants, To watch, Watching, and Watched for To Watch, To read, Reading, and Read for Reading, and To try, Cellar, and Tried for Wines.
- Assigning items
- On a shared checklist, you can assign an item to a person, such as “you grab the wipes.” They get a notification.
Making a new list
- On the Lists screen, select New.
- Choose a type. The type decides how the list works; for example, a Restaurants list gets restaurant cards.
- Name it, such as “Montauk restaurants” or “Lake house weekend.”
The same New button starts a Trip or an Event.
Ready-made lists
To start from a prepared checklist, such as an emergency kit, a packing list, or a hosting checklist, select New, then Ready-made lists. Choose one to add it as a new list, then edit it like any other list. You can also browse them at gatherby.app/templates.
The standing Groceries list
Your Groceries list is always there and can’t be deleted. Instead of making a new list each week, you reset the same one for the next trip. See Groceries.
Trips and Events
Trips and events appear as cards on the Lists screen while they’re coming up. After a trip ends or an event passes, its card leaves the Lists screen. On the web, find past ones in Settings → Trips and Settings → Events. See Trips and Events & RSVPs.
