Discover & Browse

Find your next restaurant, show, or book: see what households you follow are enjoying, check anonymous rankings, and swipe through curated lists. Discover is optional, and you choose what you share.

What’s on Discover

In the iPhone app, Discover opens on Explore. Along the top are Explore, Feed, Popular, Near you, and Circle. On the web, Discover has Feed, Popular, and Near you; your people are under Circle in a phone browser, or in the Your circle panel on a computer.

Explore (iPhone)
A card for each category, such as Movies, Shows, Books, Restaurants, and Wines, naming a few of its curated lists. Tap a card to open those lists in Browse. Below the cards, the Browse card opens picks shared by households across Gatherby.
Feed
Recent picks and activity from the households you follow, in the categories they’ve chosen to share, with their stars and notes. Select a card to see more and add it to your own list.
Popular
Rankings by category, counted anonymously. No household names are shown, and a ranking appears only once at least 3 households share that category anonymously.
Near you
Restaurants other households enjoy near your home location, counted the same anonymous way.
Circle
Your people: connection requests, new followers, people you may know who are already on Gatherby, requests you’ve sent, and households to follow.

Browse (iPhone)

Browse shows one full-screen card at a time. Open it from a category card or the Browse card on Explore.

Swipe up
Go to the next card.
Double-tap
Like it. The household that shared it is told in a daily roundup that someone liked their pick, but not who.
Swipe right
Add it to your list.
Swipe left
You’ve already done it. It’s added to your list and checked off.

The switch at the top flips between Gatherby, picks shared by other households, and Editorial, curated lists from outside Gatherby, such as book clubs, award winners, best sellers, and Michelin-starred restaurants near you. A filter along the top narrows the cards to one kind.

Following and connecting

Following
Follow a household to see the picks it shares in your Feed. Some households approve followers first, so your follow shows as Requested until they do.
Connecting
A connection goes both ways: once they accept your request, you see each other’s picks and can send each other items. Send a request from Circle with Connect. If the person isn’t on Gatherby, nothing happens and you aren’t told either way.
Unfollowing, blocking, and reporting
To unfollow, select Following next to the household and confirm. To block or report a household, use the menu on one of its cards. Blocking stops you from seeing each other on Discover and ends any follows between you. Unblock on the web in Settings → Social & sharing.

What you share

Posts
Select ✨ Post to Discover on an item to recommend it to households that follow you. On the web, Settings → Social & sharing lets you choose which kinds of things you can post. Items on private lists aren’t shown on Discover.
Anonymous trends
Off unless you turn it on, one category at a time, in Settings → General (iPhone) or Settings → Social & sharing (web). What you add, finish, and rate in that category counts toward anonymous totals, like “Watched by 24 households.” It’s never attributed to you, nothing shows until at least 3 households are counted, and turning a category off removes your contribution right away.
Your profile
Other households see your household’s profile: its name, its posts, and how many followers it has. You can add an optional photo and location. Choose whether you appear by your household name, a pseudonym, or anonymously in Settings → Social & sharing on the web. When you’re anonymous, your photo and location are hidden.

Turning Discover off

  1. Open Settings → General.
  2. Turn off Show Discover.

The Discover tab disappears, you can’t post, and your household no longer appears to other households. Nothing is deleted, so turning it back on restores everything. To stay on Discover but keep other households from finding yours, turn off Discoverable on Gatherby instead.
